Systems Research Institute
for Chemical and Biological Processes
The Systems Research Institute (SRI) for Chemical and Biological Processes, established in 2004, aims to foster Industry-University research collaborations that aim to invent new modeling and analysis methodologies and at the same tame strongly influence industrial practice.
The Institute's mission includes:
- Fostering innovating projects in data-driven modeling, optimization, and control of chemical and biological processes;
- Establishing collaborations with leading national and international researchers in Universities and Industry
- Influencing Industrial research and practices.
Industrial Consortium on Data-Driven Modeling (DDM)
The Institute's industrial consortium on Data-Driven Modeling (DDM) of batch and continuous processes, has involved the cooperation of researcher from ExxonMobil, Dow, Sunovion Pharmaceuticals, Biogen, Pfizer, and Merck and has resulted in significant research breakthroughs and publications over the last fifteen years. Major Research Breakthroughs
The two major research breakthroughs relate into two generalization of the Design of Experiments methodology with significant implication in making Machine Learning (ML) algorithms pertinent to Process Systems Engineering (PSE) problems.
They generalize the classical Design of Experiments (DoE) methodology by incorporating dynamic factors and modeling time resolved output measurements. The first generalization is called Design of Dynamic Experiments (DoDE) while the second is called Dynamic Response Surface Methodology (DRSM). The both have fueled an explosion of industrial and university collaborations. Read more Information here (link to be provided).
They have provided novel ways to address important practical problems such as:
- The Estimation of Simple and Accurate Meta-Motels or Surrogate Models
- A novel Non-Linear Sensitivity Methodology
